What is the Achilles tendon composed of?
The Achilles tendon consists of two key proteins:
- Collagen: This is the most prevalent protein in your body, constituting about one-third of your total protein. It imparts strength to your tendons.
- Elastin: This flexible protein allows the tendons to stretch and return to their original shape during movement.
The tendon receives blood supply from two vessels in the lower leg and is controlled by the sural and tibial nerves, which also provide sensation to the tendon.

Symptoms
Although some individuals with an Achilles tendon rupture may not experience noticeable signs, most will exhibit:
- A sensation similar to being kicked in the calf
- Pain, which can be severe, and swelling near the heel
- Difficulty in bending the foot downward or pushing off with the injured leg while walking
- Trouble standing on the toes of the affected leg
- A popping or snapping sound at the time of the injury
